EDMONTON - The man once convicted for a 2008 fatal shooting outside the River Cree Casino has been acquitted in a new trial ordered by the Alberta Court of Appeal.

In December 2010, Alexander Edward Colin Reid was convicted of the murder of 24-year-old Mohamed Ali Ibrahim, who was shot several times after a fist fight at the casino. Reid was given a life sentence with no chance of parole for 17 years.

That decision was overturned by the Alberta Court of Appeal in August 2013 and a new trial was ordered. The appeal court determined the original trial judge erred by failing to account for testimony of two casino security workers that cast doubt on Reid’s role in the shooting.

The appeal of the same sentence for Reid’s co-accused, Adam Michael Brown, 26, was dismissed.

On Friday, Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Eric Macklin acquitted the 26-year-old Reid of second-degree murder and assault with a weapon because he “couldn’t say with any degree of certainty” what and who key witnesses saw the night of the killing.

Conflicting witness reports, and recantations from the first trial, left Macklin doubtful about Reid’s guilt, the judge said.

The shooting happened after a birthday party in the casino’s Touch Lounge on Aug. 30, 2008. That night, a fight broke out around 1:30 a.m. involving Ibrahim’s group of friends and Reid’s.

Both groups were kicked out of the lounge. About 45 seconds after Ibrahim’s group left, he was hit with bullets from two guns.

Reid testified in his own defence at his second trial.

“He said he simply went to his car and departed,” Macklin summarized for the court. “He said he did not take part in the shooting and wasn’t present.”
