The Parx Casino in Pennsylvania is about to launch a new trend. Hoping to attract more young adults into playing slot machines, the casino’s management is thinking of providing its guests with the option to play slot machines from their smartgadgets while hanging out at social lounges with loud music and drinks.

"For whatever reason, young people don't seem to want to sit in a casino at a slot machine," said John Dixon, Chief Technology Officer for Greenwood Gaming, which owns Parx Casino. "But they like to play games on mobile devices. The idea is to create more revenue for us and the state. Our fear is that if we don't start doing something, we're looking at an aging population and falling revenues."

In a blog post by Alchemy Bet, the parent company of online slot provider pocket fruity, it was revealed that mobile gaming is “most popular amongst 25-34 year olds, with 28% of male and 27% of female gamers.” If Parx’s idea gets approval, the mobile gaming feature in the casino could become a hit amongst the younger demographic.

Casino officials from Parx have already submitted their plan to the Gaming Control Board in April, and are hoping to get a reply after three to six months.
Since online casino games are prohibited in the state of Pennsylvania, people would only be able to play them within Parx’s gaming area. To prevent anyone from playing outside the boundaries of the casino, Parx will be using a “Bluetooth Beacon” technology – a device that is capable of shutting off mobile games outside of its allowable range.

It has not always gone the way they expected, but it’s gone well nevertheless.

When Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy (né Daniel Whitney), Bill Engvall and Ron White teamed as the Blue Collar Comedy Tour in 2000, their success was practically instantaneous. All of a sudden these comedians seemed to have all of middle America doubled over laughing.

The tour became a franchise, siring movies (both theatrical and straight-to-DVD) as well as television and a branded satellite radio show.

The comedians toured together for six years before calling it quits. And here is where the surprises came. Afterward, all four continued to have a notable pop-culture presence, often in unexpected ways. Who would have predicted Foxworthy hosting a game show called “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader,” or Larry voicing a tow truck for Pixar’s “Cars,” or Engvall appearing on “Dancing With the Stars”?

As for White, who appears Saturday at Cache Creek, he continues to be a large draw on the live stage, puffing cigars and drinking scotch, both of which he uses as comic props (although those in the up-front seats should be aware there is no escaping the fumes).

He has a new DVD called “A Little Unprofessional,” has a following he calls his “Rontourage,” and posts a daily joke and sometimes advice on his tatersalad.com website. On Derby Day last week, for instance, he warned of the dangers of juleps, calling the drink “diabetes in a tall glass with muddled mint leaves.”

Anything but unprofessional, and one of the most vibrant comedians on stage, White will do two shows. (7:30 and 10 p.m.; $65; www.cachecreek.com)

Also at Cache Creek, the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan playing tonight at 9 p.m.($65, $75, $85); and Amy Ho joining Johnny Yip for a Chinese concert Sunday at 1 and 4 p.m. ($58, $78, $108)

Boomtown spruces up

Anyone who drives to Reno from Sacramento on Interstate 80 knows Boomtown. Once a popular truck stop and casino, first opening as Bill and Effie’s, it had declined in recent years.

Now, however, its owner of two years has invested $20 million in upgrades for the casino and hotel, abandoning the former “cowboy” atmosphere, turning its steakhouse into a spot called Bistro 2100, while adding a Market Fresh Deli and Baja Mexican restaurant.

Boomtown has also added monthly concerts with an emphasis on classic rock and country. Former lead singer of Bad Company, Brian Howe, performs May 25 at an enticingly low price ($19.99 general admission; boomtownreno.com).

Which came first in Jackpot, Nev., the casinos or the town?

“According to an autobiography by Al Huber, the Horseshu Club owned by Don French was the first casino on the location now known as Jackpot,” said Jackpot branch librarian Gloria Jean Ridge. The Bureau of Land Management owned the land around the Horseshu Club, Ridge said, and parcels of it were sold to Cactus Petes owners.

“Slot machines and gambling became illegal in Idaho in 1953. In 1954, an Idaho slot machine operator (French) moved his enterprise from Garden City to what is now known as Jackpot, Nev. That casino was the Horseshu Club, which is still operating in Jackpot,” said Kris Ann Brown, public relations manager for Cactus Petes Resort Casino.

Cactus Pete” Piersanti moved his slot operation from Island Park (near Rexburg) to Jackpot.

Brown said, “In the 1950s there were only casinos here in Jackpot. However, by the 1960s, the town of Jackpot had six casinos, an elementary school and a post office, which both operated out of Cactus Petes, which was opened in 1956.”

In 1958, Cactus Petes built a 15-room, single-row motel called the Desert Inn, later the Covered Wagon Motel, which eventually closed.

On April 7, 1959, the town was officially named Jackpot.

Piersanti is credited for founding and naming Jackpot. Cactus Petes management took over the Horseshu in 1964 to develop what would eventually become Ameristar Casinos. The Ameristar-owned Cactus Petes and Horseshu, as well as the independent Barton’s Club 93, Four Jacks Hotel and Casino, and Pony Express/West Star Casino, constitute the town’s economy today.

Cactus Petes $22 million expansion included a casino enlargement and addition of a 10-story hotel tower, restaurants and Olympic-sized swimming pool in 1991. The property became one of the largest gaming and hotel facilities in northeast Nevada, with nearly 300 guest rooms.

In addition to its casino industry, Jackpot now has its own airport, golf course, post office and combined schools.

The town, 48 miles south of Twin Falls on U.S. 93, has been a popular gaming destination for residents of Idaho and other neighboring states.

Major Crimes detectives are investigating a weekend shooting at a local elementary which injured a teen.

Just after 6:30 p.m. on May 3, 2014, officers were dispatched to Horizon Elementary School (222 W. Casino Rd) on the report that a male had been shot. Arriving officers found a teen on the basketball court with a gunshot wound. Officers were told a small group of teenagers were playing basketball when a group of 15-20 males in their late-teens came to the court. A verbal argument turned physical and a teen from the original group playing basketball was shot. As officers arrived, the group of late-teens left the area. Officers immediately began searching for the gunman with the assistance of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office helicopter (SnoHawk). Several teens possibly associated with the shooting were located and detained for questioning.

During the search, a police K-9 found a handgun in a nearby apartment complex. It is unknown if the gun was used in the assault.

Everett Fire assessed the injured male and transported him to Providence Regional Medical Center for treatment. His current condition is unknown.

Officers were told by witnesses that the gunman was a male in his late teens, skinny, bald and wore a blue t-shirt and jeans.

Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit are investigating the incident. At this time, no arrests have been made.

The basketball court at Horizon Elementary was also the scene of a shooting 3 years ago.
Not a lot of information yet but Everett Police are searching for a shooting suspect in south Everett. Everett Police Spokesman Aaron Snell tells MyEverettNews.com that about 6:30pm police received a call of a person shot at the basketball court of Horizon Elementary School in the 200 block of Casino Road. The only information is that the victim is a male and was taken to a local hospital. The only suspect description is of a male with a white t-shirt and baggy jeans. Everett Police have asked for assistance from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s helicopter to try to locate the suspect. More information as it becomes available. There was also a shooting at that same basketball court 3 years ago.
