UPDATE: The second day of a bankruptcy auction for the casino ended Wednesday night without a buyer. The casino hopes to have a purchaser lined up by Monday, and talks were expected to continue over the next several days.
Eleven hours of bidding for an Atlantic City casino failed to produce a new owner for it on Tuesday.
The bankruptcy auction of The Atlantic Club Casino Hotel will resume Wednesday. Participants would not say how many parties remain in the running, cautioning that the number is subject to change.
The casino was formerly known as the Atlantic City Hilton. It has struggled to compete with newer, larger casinos and with gambling halls popping up in neighboring states.
Nearly two years ago, the casino adopted a value pricing strategy, targeting low-rollers and residents put off by or unable to afford pricier casinos. The casino’s CEO, Michael Frawley, said that strategy is working but not fast enough to help stave off a Chapter 11 filing.
A deal to sell the Atlantic Club to the PokerStars website for $15 million fell through earlier this year. The two sides remain tied up in litigation, and PokerStars has since aligned itself with Resorts Casino Hotel to offer Internet gambling. But those plans hit a snag when state casino regulators suspended PokerStars’ application for two years, citing an unresolved indictment against the company’s founder.
In filings with the bankruptcy court, the casino listed assets, excluding real property, of $17.1 million and liabilities of $16.8 million.
With the Atlantic Club’s Chapter 11 filing, half of Atlantic City’s 12 casinos have filed for bankruptcy over the past six years. The Atlantic Club joins Revel Casino Hotel as Atlantic City casinos that sought Chapter 11 protection this year. Revel emerged from bankruptcy court in May.

State-licensed casinos in Louisiana won $206.5 million from gamblers in November, up $13.6 million from a year earlier.
Winnings were up from November 2012 in the Shreveport-Bossier City, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge and Morgan City markets. In the New Orleans and Opelousas markets, they were almost even – down, but by less than 1 percentage point, according to figures released Thursday.
Riverboat and land casino winnings were both up nearly 9 percent over the previous year, while race track winnings were down about 1 percent.
The riverboats took in $144.1 million, up from $132.7 million in November 2012; the land casino’s take went from $28.5 million to $31 million, and the race track slots casinos were down $364,800 to $31.4 million.
The Lake Charles market had the largest one-year increase: 13.7 percent, to $56.9 million. L’Auberge Lake Charles led with $30.8 million, up 21.6 percent from November 2012. Revenues were up 5.7 percent at the Isle of Capri, to $10.6 million, and 5.6 percent at the Delta Downs slots casino, to $15.5 million.
Delta Downs was the only track casino where revenues rose from a year ago. The Fair Grounds Race Track casino in New Orleans took in $3.7 million, down 7.3 percent from November 2012; in Opelousas, Evangeline Downs’ take of $7.4 million was down $56,300 from a year earlier, or 0.8 percent. Harrah’s Louisiana Downs race track casino in Bossier City took in $4.7 million, down 15 percent from the previous November.
However, total winnings in the Shreveport-Bossier market rose 10 percent from November 2012, to $62.7 million. A large part of that was due to the Margaritaville riverboat casino, which opened in June – Eldorado was the only other riverboat to take in more than it had a year earlier.
The Eldorado and Horseshoe riverboat casinos remained the area’s biggest draws, with the Horseshoe drawing about one in five of the riverboat customers but nearly one-third of the take, at $18.3 million. Eldorado had about one-quarter of the area’s riverboat customers but took less money from each for a total of $11.9 million in November. And Horseshoe’s winnings for the month fell 10.5 percent from a year earlier, while Eldorado’s rose 6 percent.
In New Orleans, the land casino made up for losses at the race track and riverboat casinos. Winnings at the two riverboats were down about 13 percent for a total of $16.5 million, but an increase of nearly 9 percent boosted the land casino’s take to $31 million.
Revenues rose 16 percent at L’Auberge Baton Rouge, the capital area’s largest boat, to $13.4 million. The Hollywood’s take fell 16.4 percent to $5.8 million and the Belle of Baton Rouge saw an 8.4 percent increase to $4.9 million, for an overall increase of 4.8 percent for the market.
The Amelia Belle, the only riverboat in Morgan City, took in $4.2 million, up 5 percent from November 2012.
The Louisiana Gaming Control Board released figures compiled by state police.

Rhode Island says the Twin River Casino took in more money in the first four months of the budget year, but revenue from video slot machines tumbled.
The Providence Journal reports that from July through October, the machines at Twin River produced $156.8 million, a drop of $572,946 from the same period last year before the new table games cut the number of video lottery terminals by about 200.
Combined with a $1.4-million drop at the Newport Grand slot parlor, the machines generated $1.9 million less than during the same period last year. It’s about $2 million less than state revenue officials expected.
Adding table games was supposed to boost the state’s take from the video slot machines. Officials blame occasional bad weather and the draw of the Red Sox.

MGM Resorts International won a license for a large casino and resort in Maryland near the nation’s capital.
A state commission voted 5-2 in favor of Las Vegas-based MGM’s proposal to build a $925 million resort near the Potomac River at National Harbor with a 300-suite hotel, casino and seven restaurants. The casino plan includes 3,600 slot machines and 140 table games such as blackjack and roulette.
“I want to build the most beautiful, iconic and successful resort,” said Jim Murren, CEO of MGM Resorts International. “I think outside of Las Vegas, this will be the most profitable commercial resort in the United States, and I want to bring that here.”
Murren said the resort will create 2,000 construction jobs and 4,000 permanent jobs.
Maryland voters approved a casino in the county last year after lawmakers agreed to expand gambling in a special session. Before the vote, MGM spent about $40 million to help get the ballot question passed, while Penn National spent more than $42 million to defeat the expansion – a move largely viewed as an effort to protect a large casino in West Virginia owned by the company near Maryland’s border.
The license is the sixth granted in five years in Maryland, and four casinos have already opened. This casino could not open until July 2016, or 30 months after a casino being built in Baltimore opens. A Harrah’s casino there is expected to open next year, not far from where the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens play.
Penn National, based in Wyomissing, Pa., had proposed a $700 million casino at the company’s Rosecroft Raceway in Prince George’s County, about 13 miles from Washington. The Hollywood Casino Resort at Rosecroft Raceway would have included slot machines, live table games and a poker room. The plan also included a hotel with a pool and spa and a multipurpose event center. Rosecroft also would have featured horse racing.
Maryland Casino LLC, a subsidiary of Greenwood Racing, proposed the $800 million Parx Casino Hotel & Spa on a 22-acre parcel in Fort Washington with a hotel and entertainment venue. Greenwood Racing owns and operates Pennsylvania’s highest revenue-generating casino, Parx Casino.
Don Fry, the chairman of the state’s Video Lottery Facility Location Commission, said he believed the amenities at the MGM proposal were stronger. Commissioners who supported the MGM proposal also said it would raise more money for the state.
“I think that it is truly a destination resort, which is one of the criteria that we take into consideration, and the infrastructure is far superior,” Fry said after the vote.
The MGM plan includes a luxury spa and rooftop pool at the hotel. It also includes plans for high-end retail, as well as fine and casual dining. The plan calls for a 1,200-seat theater venue, 35,000 square feet of meeting and event space and a 5,000-space parking structure.
National Harbor already is a 300-acre development of shops and restaurants and waterfront hotels that first started opening in 2008 on the Potomac River across from Washington, where the monuments of the nation’s capital are visible from the development’s parking garages.
Commissioners expressed concern about economic projections by consultants for Penn National and had questions about transportation infrastructure near the proposed Parx casino. Commissioners also noted that they were pleased with the casino design proposed by MGM. They said MGM also stood better to draw customers because of their casinos in other parts of the country, like Las Vegas.

Tribesmen that are interested in knowing whether the Menominee tribe will be able to build an $800 million casino in Kenosha may have to wait until after Gov. Scott Walker runs for re-election next November to hear his decision.
That was hinted over the weekend by Walker’s administration secretary, Mike Huebsch, who said that the state’s attorneys and financial adviser may need more time to examine the tribe’s off-reservation project.
Actually, the plans call for locating the casino on the grounds of a defunct greyhound racing facility.
When he first received the plans, Walker said he would give his approval provided all 12 tribes in the state approved. All did approve, except for two that run casinos. Fear of competition had them screaming their disapproval.
Now, that “veto” power, granted to the tribes by Walker, may be rescinded, the secretary said.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper, Huebsch hinted that Scott may go along with the Menominee casino despite objections from the two dissenting tribes. But, all probably will have to await next November’s elections.
