Pelicans moved to within a point of third place Bourne Deeping after making it 21 goals in two games away at Colchester on Saturday.
They settled quickly and straight away showed that their 13-0 victory over Chelmsford last week wasn’t a fluke as they raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Simons and Lankfer who carried on their excellent form in front of goal.
After having a third goal ruled out by the umpires Colchester finally found their feet in the game and pulled one back from a short corner. The hosts had their best spell of the half after this as they look to avoid relegation; however they found Allsop, Henry, Major and then Kerry in determined mood at the back.
Bower was in goal because of Aldous’s absence and he also looked in solid form.
Despite the danger on the break Pelicans were able to break with ease. Picton, Frost, Sheerin, Walpole and Johnstone all linked well with each other and were able to pick out passes for their front line.
Johnstone made it 3-1 with a superb finish after being set up by Simons and then with the final play of the half Pelicans won a short corner which was dispatched by Simons.
The home side scored first in the second half to give them hope but Pelicans made sure of no come-back as first Lankfer and then Simons completed their hat-tricks, the best of which arrived from Lankfer with a full length dive to beat the goalkeeper to the ball. Simons netted another four to take his tally to eight in two games.
Despite late consolations by Colchester it was a very professional performance against what could have been a potential banana skin for Pelicans.
They entertain top of the league and old rivals Spalding tomorrow looking to keep hopes of promotion alive.
